Alluring Anemones: Windflowers Full of Wonder
Anemones, also known as windflowers, are delicate yet bold blooms found in a wide range of colours—from soft pastels to deep purples and reds. Their name comes from the Greek word anemos, meaning wind, as ancient myths said the flowers opened with the wind’s touch. Native to temperate regions around the world, anemones have a rich history in folklore and symbolism. In Victorian times, they represented fragile beauty or unfading love, while in Greek mythology, they were linked to the tragic love story of Adonis and Aphrodite. Although beautiful, some species of anemones are mildly toxic, especially to pets.
Fun Fact: Anemones close their petals at night or during cloudy weather—almost like they’re sleeping! This behaviour, called nyctinasty, helps protect their pollen and makes them seem almost alive with personality
