Pink Valerian: The Long-Blooming Jewel That Thrives Where Others Can’t

On our flower farm, one of our most endearing characters that bloom is the Pink Valerian. With its bushy sprays of clustered pink, red, or even white flowers—and nicknames like Jupiter’s Beard and Devil’s Beard—this plant brings both beauty and history to the garden. Native to the Mediterranean, it was beloved by 16th-century herbalists like John Gerard and later escaped into cultivated wilds, thriving in cracks of old walls and rocky soils. Its long bloom period and irresistible nectar make it a favourite among bees and butterflies.

Fun fact: Pink Valerian not only looks dreamy—it blooms from spring through frost, making a vibrant, pollinator-friendly show that keeps going all season long, without needing any fuss.
